Laminate flooring
Real wood looks, at a friendlier price
Laminate flooring is a tough, scratch resistant floor with a printed wood or stone effect surface and a fibreboard core. RedRose Carpets supplies and fits laminate across Kirkham, Preston, Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and the Fylde coast, with the right underlay and neat finishing at doorways and skirting.
Modern laminate is a world away from the hollow sounding boards of twenty years ago. Today's ranges have deep, realistic grain, bevelled edges and surfaces that stand up to chair legs, toys and claws.
What to look for
- AC rating. Tells you how hard wearing the surface is. AC3 suits most homes, AC4 and above suits busy hallways and family rooms.
- Thickness. Thicker boards, typically 8mm to 12mm, feel more solid underfoot and are better at bridging small imperfections.
- Water resistance. Standard laminate has a wood fibre core and dislikes water. Water resistant ranges with sealed edges are better for hallways and kitchens.
- Underlay. The right underlay reduces noise and footfall sound, and a built in moisture barrier is essential on concrete floors.

FAQs
Laminate questions
Is laminate or LVT better?
Laminate is usually cheaper and has a hard wearing, scratch resistant surface. LVT copes much better with water and feels warmer. For lounges, dining rooms and bedrooms laminate is a great value choice. For kitchens and bathrooms we usually recommend LVT. Our LVT vs laminate guide compares them in detail.
Can laminate go in a kitchen?
Only a water resistant laminate, and even then we would talk you through the risks around sinks and dishwashers. LVT is usually the safer choice for kitchens.
Is laminate noisy?
It can be on cheap underlay. A good acoustic underlay makes a big difference, especially in upstairs rooms and flats. We will recommend the right one.
Will doors need trimming?
Sometimes. Laminate and underlay can raise the floor height slightly. We check this at the free measure and tell you beforehand.
