Stairs are where a good fitter really shows. Every tread is a slightly different shape, winders need patience, and the carpet has to sit tight on the nosing so it is safe and wears evenly. That is why we never hand stairs to someone we do not know.

A strip of carpet down the centre of the stairs, leaving painted or wooden edges on show. A smart, classic look for period homes.

Choosing the carpet
Stairs take the most wear in any home. A dense twist, a wool rich carpet or a tight weave will keep its looks the longest on the nosing of each step.

Stair carpet questions
How much does it cost to carpet stairs?
It depends on the carpet, the number of steps and whether the stairs are straight or have winders. Winders, a landing, a Hollywood fit and premium wool all add to the cost. We give you a fixed price after a free measure. See our carpet cost guide for more.
What is a waterfall or Hollywood fit?
A waterfall fit lets the carpet flow over the edge of each step and drop straight down to the riser, which is quick and tidy. A Hollywood fit wraps the carpet tightly around the nosing and under, so the shape of each step is defined. It takes longer but gives a sharp, tailored finish.
Do you fit stair rods?
No. We supply and fit the runner itself, but we no longer fit stair rods. Rods are mainly decorative today, as the runner is fixed underneath, so a runner looks smart without them. If you would like rods, they need to be fitted separately once the runner is down.
How long does it take to carpet stairs?
A straight staircase usually takes around half a day. Stairs with winders, a landing or a runner can take most of a day.
