Short answer: LVT is the best hard floor for dogs because it is water resistant, quieter under paws than laminate and easy to clean. If you want carpet, choose a stain resistant cut pile, such as a polypropylene or polyester twist in a mid or flecked colour, and avoid loop pile, which claws can snag.
Pets bring muddy paws, accidents, shedding and claws, all of which are hard on floors. The good news is that modern flooring copes with them far better than it used to, as long as you choose the right type for each room.
Hard floors for dogs
- LVT. Water resistant, so accidents and wet paws are not a problem. It is quieter and less slippery than many laminates and comfortable for older dogs to lie on. Choose a textured or matt finish to hide light scratches.
- Laminate. Very scratch resistant on the surface, but the joints do not like water. Choose a water resistant range and mop up accidents quickly.
Carpets for homes with pets
- Choose cut pile, not loop pile. Claws catch in loops and pull them, which is the most common pet damage we see.
- Choose stain resistant fibres. Polypropylene and polyester resist stains far better than wool. Many solution dyed polypropylene carpets can be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution, but always follow the maker's care guide.
- Choose a mid tone or fleck. Very light and very dark plain carpets show hair and marks the most.
- Keep carpet away from the door. Many pet owners put LVT in the hall and kitchen, where muddy paws come in, and keep carpet for the lounge and bedrooms.
Stairs and pets
A dense twist carpet works well on stairs with pets, as it grips better than a hard floor and hides wear. Avoid loop pile runners if you have a dog or cat that runs up and down.
